I love trying out new place to eat! Especially when they are in my own backyard (well kind of I'm 45 mins from Philly). It's always cool to see what new tastes and places you can find! Now Square Peg has no clue I'm writing this review (except for the tweet they will see). I paid for my own meal and all opinions are my own.
So this place was different. It is a little hole in the wall that I'm not sure you would know was there unless you knew it was there. An unassuming brick building on the outside reveals an inside that has a lot of space and a bar. (YAY!) My mom and I sat in the booth and we ordered lunch.
The first thing I tried was the Square Shandy. It was lager and lemonade. Not one of the sweetest shandys I've had but it had a nice light flavor that went well with my lunch.
Next up was soup. Well soup for me and chili for my mom. Mom's chili was had a rich spiciness about it. Not too hot but a nice after burn in the back of the throat.
I loved my carrot ginger soup! It has a natural sweetness from the carrot with out being sugary. The ginger was a light flavor in the background with out over powering the taste.
Now it was entree time! Mom got the warm goat cheese and beets salad. I love a good salad and this was a GOOD salad. The goat cheese isn't just warmed it is wrapped in dough and cooked (I can't tell if it was baked or fried. I also couldn't care cause it was yummy!) The ginger picked beets were slightly sweet and the white balsamic dressing was the perfect amount of acid. My only "complaint" is that I wanted to get all the flavors in one bite. But with beets, lettuce, cheese and walnuts it was a challenge.
I had the lamb burger. It had the perfect lamb flavor. If you like a gyro it had a very similar taste. The burger itself was juicy and delicious. I just wish it had more sauce. The pancetta was a nice touch and added a bacon flavor without all of the smokiness that comes with traditional bacon. I loved the flavor of the Alouette cheese. It has the right amount of pungent flavor to balance out the lamb. I may be delusional but it almost tasted like tzatziki which is served on a gyro.
Last and most awesome was the carrot cake sundae. Also known as "things that make my life". This was a wonderful cream cheese icing ice cream. Which sounds like a sugar shock but was far from it. It was sweet and flavorful and it went perfect with the chunks of carrot cake. And the caramel? Carrot caramel! It just enhanced the flavor. And of course there were candied walnuts... Because you gotta!
All in all I loved Square Peg and am now dying to go back! It was such a chill and fun atmosphere and the food was amazing. Maybe a nice girls' night out or an afternoon break during a city visit.
I've never been to Philadelphia except a stop at the airport, but this restaurant looks really good!
ReplyDeleteYour lager looks sweet! Carrot ginger soup? Yum, I bet it really warms you up. The salad looks very good; I'm always looking for interesting salads beyond just normal lettuce + dressing. Goat cheese looks excellent! I'll have to remember this restaurant for the next time I make it to Philly!
We travel to Philly at least 1x per year. Wish it were more often. We have never eaten here. Sounds very interesting. Chili for my hubby soup for me. Just wondering if you knew whether or not. They have live music?
ReplyDeleteGreat review! That salad looks awsome. Have to ask, did you take a look at the beer menu? Was there a lot of variety?
ReplyDeleteDon't remember a large beer variety. A lot of drinks.
ReplyDeleteYep! But not at lunch time.
ReplyDeleteYum!!! I think I gained 10 lbs just looking at that dessert ;)
