RIP Custard

Hey guys and dolls. I'm hella sad today. I found out that my cat Custard passed away this past Sunday. She was 18. In fact she just turned 18 June 9th. All I keep thinking is "stubborn 18 year old cat". I knew she was getting older and was going to leave me soon. I vainly hoped I'd be there when she left. But here I am in Virginia and there she was in New Jersey. Needless to say I miss her already. I know by writing this people will be tempted to tell me she's in a better place or it was her time. Please don't. Honestly it just upsets me. I've understood death for many years now. Simply put death is when something I love goes away and I don't get to see it every day like I used to. I know it's more complicated than that but this explanation is how I cope. In any case hugs and well wishes are welcomed. And I'm sorry to get so personal. I just needed someone to talk to.

Brave Review

Note: I am going to try hard to keep this spoiler free but I have learned that one man's common knowledge is another man's spoiler (Brave is set in Scotland?!)

From Facebook

I'm going to be honest... I didn't love Brave. I liked it. It actually almost had me in tears at some parts. But it just didn't feel like Pixar to me. The magic of movies like The Incredibles, Up, Wall-E and others just wasn't here for me. Dare I say this movie felt a bit too human.

Without revealing too much of the plot I will say the story focuses on Merida and her relationship with her mother. That's the part that made me teary because I am very close with my mom. However I found that whatever relationship you have with you mother is what you brought to the movie with you. I had someone tell me that they weren't as close with their mother and they felt nothing.

This speaks to how the relationship wasn't really developed in the movie (I can hear you moaning at me now! Let me explain.) Merida and her mom don't really come off as close they are at odds during most of the movie. We only get glimpses into times when they liked each other.

Brave also seems to have fallen into the "Shrek trap". There are some very adult jokes in this movie. Jokes that include cleavage, the bare butts of several men, and a naked woman (we don't see her naked but it's talked about.) I don't think this is bad but if you walk into this as a parent you'll want to know this ahead of time.

My biggest issue with this movie (I do like it but I have to get the negative stuff out of the way.) is something I like to call "character overload". Basically there were to many characters to focus on and it made it hard to see where the true story was. Between the boys, the dad, the other Scotsmen, the nurse and a witch (among others) there was still Merida and her mom to think about. It's a lot.

Now the good stuff. It is probably the most beautiful movie I have seen in a long time! The animation is gorgeous, the setting is wonderful and I loved the music. It was also a very funny movie with several laugh out loud moments. The characters are fun and it was nice to see a princess who could hold her own in a fight.

I would tell you the same thing I tell myself when I read a review: See it for yourself! You never know. What I don't like about it you may love about it. And what I love you might hate. You have to experience these things for yourself.

If you have seen Brave, what did you think?

Silly Saturday: Fight!

I love old school fighting vid games. I love Disney villains. I love this pic I found!!!

All credit to http://violatekate.deviantart.com/
Tell me this wouldn't be the coolest fighting video game ever!!! Oh and in case you don't know the villains in this are Mirage, Zira, Madame Medusa, Queen of Hearts, The Evil Queen, Madame Mim, The Step Sisters, Maleficent, Cruella, and Ursula. I also love that they are like sexy teen versions of themselves...

What do you think?

#BlogHer12 Blog Hopping

Hey guys and dolls! I have been talking about this whole #BlogHer12 thing a lot. One of the things I forgot to mention is the many many AWESOME bloggers that are going to be there as well. I've been keeping a list. What's great is that they are bloggers from all walks of life with different passions and interests. I love checking out their sites and learning something new. You should give them a read. You might like what they have to say. :-)

If you don't write everyday, you're not a writer...

This is the quote my prof used to start out the semester. And it got me to thinking (which hurts). Am I a writer? I try to write every day. I think about writing every day. But DO I write every single day? The answer is no. And yet if you ask me what I want to do with my life the answer is write. I guess that's part of the reason I started blogging. So I would have an outlet for my writing. Even just getting thoughts like this out of my head and into word form really helps keep me from getting rusty.

Are you a writer? How often do you write?

I LOVE Learning!

Hey guys and dolls! Today was the first day of classes. Is it sad to say I had fun at school? Well I so did!

I had a class at 9am. This class is about taking true stories and turning them into screenplays and dramatic stories. The idea isn't just to rehash someone's life on film but to dramatize it and make a compelling movie out of it.

I decided for this class I would talk about the Sherman Bros (PS I am so sorry if you've already read this on my Facebook and Twitter). I'm excited to keep my story in the Disney family. I am also warning you now that I'll be looking for the sad parts of their lives and not just the happy Sherman Bros tales. I'll let you know how it goes.

The other class I'm taking is about writing "spec" scripts for TV. You take an existing TV show and write a what-if script. I chose Family Guy. Ok so it's not Disney but I love animation and how much freedom (and yet restriction) it gives you as a writer. It's like you're free to write what you want but you still have to be true to the characters and the world they live in.

Needless to say I am stoked for this summer! Hopefully I can keep this excitement all summer long.

Day 1

Technically today is day 1 in the 6 week long summer program that is my grad school. We have orientation in the morning. I'm not looking forward to it. I don't know if I mentioned it before but my prof (my friend) died last October and he was the head of the program. I fear that part of the discussion at the orientation will be about the group loss and what we do from there. It's sort of appropriate that yesterday was father's day. My prof (my friend) was like another father to me. Losing him hit me pretty hard. I tend to write a lot of these personal posts with tears in my eyes. Sometimes I just have to tell someone. I choose my guys and dolls.

I am trying very hard to focus on the hope of a new year and less on loss. My friend would want all of us to keep moving forward.

Packing for 6 Weeks

This is one of those throw away posts I write from time to time. You know the personal ones that you can just skip.

But I decided to add a new label to the Lair and that's "Grad School". Usually I get to grad school and get so overwhelmed I stop writing. Well I am trying to avoid that this year. So I want to write about what I'm up to, projects I'm working on and life. I'm hoping to sprinkle some Disney, BlogHer and other fun post in with this.

Why is the title of the post "packing for 6 weeks"? Because that's what I am supposed to be doing RIGHT NOW! I have to try to fit 6 weeks of stuff in a suit case and hope for the best. I hate packing for that long. My luck I'll forget something. Mostly I pack clothes and bed stuff. The rest I pick up when I hit Virgina. Why overload the car?

I think this will be the summer of the dress... Mainly because I really don't want to think about outfit choices. Also I'm bringing running shoes and clothes so I can train for the 2 5Ks I am "running" this year. Wish me luck. And of course I have my school books and notebooks.

It should really be a great summer. I guess it just sort of snuck up on me this year. Life keeps me busy.

Blogging Nobody

I once called myself a Disney nobody. I'd link to that post but I'm once again blogging from my phone. I now am getting more and more into the world of blog and now I want to call myself a blogging nobody. I'm a small blog. Nothing huge. I have a small but fabulous and loyal readership. But recently some really cool things have been happening. Things I'm very happy and proud of. What makes me most happy is that I can share the cool stuff that I do with my guys and dolls. Like I got 2 really cool party invites. One is called Sweet Suite and it's all about toys (kid toys not desperate house wife toys ;). The second is the Highlights Magazine release party. They are releasing a new Highlights Hello mag for 0-2 year olds. I remember Highlights from childhood and still read it when I can. I am beyond excited for both events and of course I'll be tweeting (from @dragynally) the whole time. These aren't until August but still. I had to share the excitement with you. Any way. I have to play catch up on reviews and recaps and Disney stuff. And this summer I'll be writing a lot about me as grad student. Maybe even post pages of screenplays I'm working on. There was a point to this... I guess the point is maybe I'm not a nobody. I'm on someone's radar and that means good things for all of us. And it also means I should stop calling myself a nobody. I should call myself a somebody and expect the respect that comes with that. I don't know. In any case thanks for reading guys and dolls. I hope I make you proud.

Yehaa Bob!!!

Tucked away in Disney's Port Orleans Riverside resort there's a bar called the River Roost. And in that bar is one of the best shows on Disney property!

If you've seen Yehaa Bob you know I'm not exaggerating. If you haven't you need to go to www.yehaabob.com and see if you can plan your trip around a visit to Bob.

Bob is a piano playing, comedy slinging genius! I saw his entire show 2x last night. That's right folks he puts on more than one show a night.

Not only does he sing songs and make you laugh but he makes you part of the show! I think I got called up on stage a few times last night. Oh that the other thing. If Bob introduces himself to you 9x out of 10 he will remember you and call you out all night!

Any way it is a blast! A Disney must do that you may not even know exists.

Seas with Nemo and Friends

Still blogging on the cell phone. I am actually learning to adapt to the blogger app. :-)

Today I want to talk about the Seas with Nemo and Friends. This isn't so much a review as it is a raving endorsement.

I love this ride so much! It has fun familiar characters, great story and one of my favorite Disney animatronics of all time.

You ride in your clam-mobile and visit the dark cool undersea world of Nemo- who has once again gone "missing"and we follow him through the sea.

Ok that might have been a wasted paragraph. All you need to know is all your favorite characters are here an if you want to beat the Disney heat it has a long indoor AC infused wait line.

If you've ridden it what do you like about the ride?

Tutto Gusto

This will be a very quick review because I'm writing it on my cell phone in the lobby of the Beach club. :-)

Tutto Gusto is a lovely cool retreat from a hot Epcot. Like La Cava or Le Cellier it's like a cave. Well in this case a wine cellar.

For lunch I had buffala mozzarella, rughetta e patate, tiramisu, Verdicchio wine and cappuccino.

The wine was light and crisp but not as sweet as I had hoped. If you are a dry wine drinker you might find it really sweet. If you, like me, like sweet wine, it will taste light and fresh but sour.

The buffala mozzarella makes my life! It had a beautiful soft a cool texture (yes I said the texture was cool!) it was covered in olive oil and served with focaccia. So yummy!

The pasta was dry to me but I love sauce. It was pasta curls with potatoes and pancetta with olive oil and arugula. Bacon and potatoes. Yes. The pasta was really think to me but that's just me.

On a side note the plates are small which is great if you want to try a bunch of stuff or you don't eat a ton.

Tiramisu was standard. Really good but I don't think I've ever had a tiramisu I didn't like so this wasn't special.

All in all I liked Tutto Gusto a lot. I will say that I felt a bit rushed but maybe that's just a sign of an attentive wait staff.

Game Time!

Ok I know I already did a Wordless Wednesday but I want to post more pics to the blog! In that aim I'd like to introduce the hottest game sweeping the interwebs....

Guess that chandelier!

Ok maybe it's just fun for me. In any case this post has chandelier pics. You have to guess where they're from. No prizes but my undying love. :-)

I WANT to go to #SocialSoiree but...

An invite does not define who I am or control my personal happiness.

Let me start this post by apologizing to my guys and dolls about writing about something that you don't really understand. Or, worse yet, I don't even understand enough to properly explain to you.

Here's what I know: BlogHer is a HUGE conference for bloggers of all backgrounds to get together and learn, network, etc. Because of the massive amounts of bloggers there companies (AKA brands) have realized that they can monopolize on the bloggers being in one place. How you might ask... Private parties. These are smaller more intimate affairs that allow brands and blogger to connect on much deeper levels. Well that's the idea at least.

For those of you following my DragynAlly account on twitter you may have noticed my #SweetSuite, #GettingGorgeous and #SocialSoiree hashtags. These are the 3 private parties I am most interested in. I am pleased to report that I was invited (yes invited) to Sweet Suite! This invite is a huge deal because only a select few are invited and everyone else can sign up if there is room. So I guess this little Dragyn is a VIP. ;-)

The next party I am really hoping to get into is Social Soiree. I've heard so many wonderful things about it and it seems like so much fun. Frankly guys and dolls I really want to get better at networking with brands. I may have said this before but brands mean more experiences and products to share with all of you. In fact I want to ask brands "what can you do for my guys and dolls"... But that sounds pushy.

Now because there is so much buzz surrounding parties like this people are getting scared. They're worried about not getting in and they say things like they'll be devastated if they don't go. I'll be sad if I don't get to Social Soiree but I will not be devastated. Life will go on. There will be other parties. Or there won't. But I am awesome no matter what goes down.

I also see some bloggers trying to rain on other's parades. You'd be surprised (or not) to see how many bloggers say "private parties aren't that great" or "there are great bloggers who didn't get invited". Maybe this is true but I am stoked for the parties and I am a great blogger! (So weird to write that by the way.)

Now don't get me wrong, there is a TON of stuff to do at BlogHer even if you never get a party invite. But I got one. And I refuse to let anyone talk me out of how awesome that is!

Finally there is the issue of "twimping" yourself out.  Twimp (v): A strange combination of twitter and pimp. Some bloggers are so annoyed with people "begging" for invites. Others are begging. In the blog game you have to be your own hype man, so to speak. No one else will be as much in your corner as you. So for the most part I say do what you have to. That doesn't mean being rude but "the squeaky wheel gets the grease".

I say ALL of that to say that I have been tweeting Social Soiree and that hashtag as much as I can and I am having fun with it. I make jokes and connect with the people behind the party, to the best of my ability. But whatever they decide to do as far as invites is on them and there isn't anything I can do about it. So I refuse to stress.

Wherever I am is where the party is at!

Silly Saturday

Ok maybe this isn't "silly" exactly. But it's fun...

This pic found HERE

There are some songs that have NOTHING at all to do with Disney that remind me of Disney. Example: Brandy's "Top of the World" reminds me of the Top of the World Lounge at Bay Lake Tower.

Also One Republic's "All the Right Moves" kind of reminds me of being a Disney blogger (there is some psychology to that, I am sure.) But neither of these songs were written with Disney in mind or ever used by Disney in any capacity. They just feel like Disney to me.

I say all of that to say this- Do you have songs that are COMPLETELY unrelated to Disney that remind you of Disney? In what ways do these songs remind you of Disney? Maybe together we can make an awesome "Not Quite Disney" playlist. Who's in?
