Dream Shows: Villains Tonight

Let me start out this post the way I wanted to start the last one. Make sure you don't miss any shows just because of the opinions you hear from other people. One of my friends skipped a show while we were on the Dream. He was told by other people that is wasn't worth it. But because he listened to others he'll never know for himself. So with that in mind let the show reviews continue!

I LOVED Villains Tonight! It was my favorite of the three shows. But I loved it for the same reason a lot of people weren't fans: There was a lot of pop culture humor and improv! The actor who played Hades had to be on his toes the entire time and work with the audience's reactions. I really like that. But some people feel that the pop culture styling felt a bit anti-Disney. I think the pop culture made it feel fresh and new. I hate to blog this out loud but some times Disney stories can get a little stale... There I said it! With Villains Tonight I get the sense that the story stays fresh and is different each time it is played. Yay improv!

The plot of Villains Tonight is a little cheesy. But when the company is run by a mouse that's to be expected! (I'm a dork!) In a post Hades beat be Hercules world the Underworld has become a Vegas style review and a whole lot less evil than it once was. The fates come in and tell Hades that if this place does not become real evil real quick he will lose control of the Underworld. Hades decides to call in as many Disney villains as he can find to help him fill the Evil-o-Meter up. In the end Hades realizes -with the help of a few felonious friends- that the only one who ca make the Underworld evil is him.

Now I loved ALL the musical acts in this. My favorites would have to be the lounge singing Ursula and the hard rock Scar. Both of which looked like they may have stolen some items from my wardrobe! ;-) Oh and proof that even though I am a good writer I am not perfect I got my Cruellas mixed up. THIS Cruella had the fashion show. The Cruella in the Golden Mickey's had my favorite outfit on.

The best part of the show was Hades. He made the show for me because we had a fast talking wise guy. If you see this show please let me know what you Hades was like because I think that might change everything! Also Hades is one of my favorite villains to begin with. I also liked the performances of Pain and Panic but if someone could explain to me why they are wearing glasses that's be great!

  2. I take it this was on the Disney Cruise Line? It's got to be too good to play regular theater, or even Fringe Theater.

  4. From the previews on Youtube by DisneyParks has me been wanting to see this very badly!! I've seen short clips of people posting of the show on youtube so it gave me a more deeper meaning to watch it on the Disney Dream someday I return to a cruise again.

    Thanks for posting! :)

  5. I heard about this one! Apparently there was supposed to be a part with Dr. Facilier but they cut it out. Yes KRONK! Sorry I love that guy! I'm sure I'd love this show, as I start to laugh uncontrollably at any sort of improv!

    Awesome pictures!

  7. I've heard a lot of negative things about this one, but it looks like you loved it! I definitely want to see this one since I never have. I'm going to try to see all the shows on the Dream!

  8. I can't comment on the acting or the music, but the costuming and lighting look terrific (and I'm of the opinion that live performance without some room for improvisation is hopelessly stifled. Might as well just show a film).

  9. Now this one totally looks like it's up my ally! I love the villains a little too much, lol (that was pointed out to me by 2 friends today!) The costumes look fantastic and I love the idea of improve and pop-culture. You can use both and still maintain a "Disney-friendly" atmosphere. That idea is part of the reason I love Aladdin at DCA, its always a little different each time you see it. Thanks for another review to whet my cruising appetite!

  11. I'm sold. Hercules and The Emperor's New Groove are two of my favorites. Very underrated movies. And my husband is very excited now -- big villains fan.

  12. Show looks great for adults but maybe not so much for kids? The fact that it's improv means it could be something a little different each time which is also nice.

  13. Just seeing the picture I can hear it "Patience Iago..." :-)

What a great idea for a show. I love the idea of Project Cruella! And Hades having to be on his toes is GREAT, I love good improv. thanks for the recommendation.

  17. It looks like a good show; however, I do think that the show you blogged about yesterday would go over better with my kids. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks to Marc for the pics! @canyongirl789

  19. If I had gone on the cruise, this is the one I would have been most excited for. Looks amazing! I've even listened to some of the audio. Still can't believe that all of this takes place on one cruise ship. It just blows my mind. Great pictures by Marc. Thanks for blogging about this. It really brings some of the magic back to those of us who weren't able to be on the cruise. :)

  21. This looks like so much fun! I like how they used a lot of disney characters and didn't save money by just having a few characters. Captain Hook is my favorite and I like how they have him in this! I think the fact that Hades interacted with the audience is cool!

  22. This show sounds like so much fun! I would love to see a show with villains! Also, I don't think there is anything wrong with the pop culture in a Disney show, the Genie in the Aladdin musical in DCA always had jokes that had to do with current celebrity news and gossip, it was great.
Again, great pictures from Marc and a wonderful review.
